A Wellbeing Vision for The Brook School

Promoting Physical and Mental Health and Wellbeing Across Our Whole School Community

Our Wellbeing Vision

At The Brook, we believe that every child – whatever their needs, whatever their voice – deserves to feel safe, valued, joyful and well. Wellbeing is not something we add to our school day: it is the foundation of everything we do.

Rooted in our R.E.S.P.E.C.T Wellbeing Mindset, launched in January 2019, our vision is to nurture the physical and mental health of every pupil, every member of staff, every family and every part of our community – so that all of our children can grow, thrive, achieve and lead the lives they want to live.

This vision is held and lived by all of us – pupils, staff, parents, carers and governors – together.

The R.E.S.P.E.C.T Wellbeing Mindset

In January 2019, The Brook School launched its bespoke R.E.S.P.E.C.T Wellbeing Mindset. It encompasses the core values of The Brook and outlines the key attitudes and approaches most important in supporting the overall wellbeing of our pupils and their families.

Below, each element of R.E.S.P.E.C.T is expressed through the lens of physical and mental health and wellbeing:

R – relationships

We build warm, trusting relationships with every pupil, family and colleague. Feeling safe in relationships is the foundation of all wellbeing. We take the time to know each child as an individual – their needs, preferences and joys.

E – evaluative

We listen carefully and observe thoughtfully. Every child’s wellbeing is monitored with care and compassion. We hear pupil voice in every form – verbal, signed, symbolic or behavioural – and we act on what we learn.

S – structured

We know that clear routines, boundaries and expectations create safety and predictability that allows our pupils to feel calm, secure and ready to thrive. Structure, for our community, is an act of care.

P – positivity

We surround our pupils with positivity, encouragement and joy. We celebrate every step of progress – however it looks. Our school is full of laughter, light and enthusiasm, where every child is affirmed as capable, valued and loved.

E – engagement

We involve every pupil actively in their own wellbeing – through food choices, therapeutic sessions, creative arts and daily activities. Being engaged in your own health is the beginning of lifelong wellbeing.

C – consistency

We share a common wellbeing mindset across our entire school community. Staff, families and governors are united in their approach, ensuring every pupil experiences the same warmth, care and high expectations wherever they are.

T – teamwork

Wellbeing at The Brook is everyone’s responsibility. We work together – pupils, staff, parents, carers, therapists and governors – with the child and their family at the very center of our shared commitment. No one walks this journey alone.

Our Wellbeing Commitments

Guided by R.E.S.P.E.C.T, we commit to creating a school where:

  • every child is known as a whole person – their physical health, emotional wellbeing, sensory needs and mental health are all understood, respected and actively supported
  • wellbeing is woven into every part of the school day – from the moment a child arrives to the moment they leave; their wellbeing is prioritised by everyone around them
  • physical health is celebrated and nurtured through daily movement, therapeutic activities, healthy eating, sensory experiences and the joy of an active life
  • mental and emotional health are supported with the same seriousness and compassion as physical health – there is no stigma, no silence, and no child left without the support they need
  • every pupil – regardless of how they communicate – has a voice for their own wellbeing, and we listen and respond to that voice with care and respect
  • families are true partners in their child’s wellbeing: they are informed, included, supported and celebrated
  • staff feel valued, healthy  and equipped to support the children they serve – because staff wellbeing and pupil wellbeing are inseparable
  • positive attitudes to health and wellbeing are modelled, taught and celebrated by the whole school community, so that our pupils carry these values into their futures
  • difference is not just accepted but embraced – our community’s diversity of need is a strength, and every child’s individual path to wellbeing is honoured
  • our inclusive learning community – built on collaboration, harmony and trust – is a place where every child is kept safe, every childhood is enjoyed and every life is enriched

Our vision for wellbeing at The Brook is simple:

that every child – whatever their needs, whatever their voice – grows up feeling healthy, happy, safe and proud of who they are.

R.E.S.P.E.C.T is how we make that vision real – every day, for every child, together.
